Environmental benefits of turf
This project is reviewing the literature in Australia and internationally to determine a comprehensive list of the environmental benefits of turfgrass. This will include a review of the refereed and non-refereed articles to identify key environmental claims. The review will also provide a critical assessment of the information highlighting areas where sufficient supporting scientific information exists and, conversely, where further research is recommended.
The project is expected to produce the following outputs:
A clear understanding of the environmental benefits of turf grass, underpinned by a sound knowledge of the level of scientific evidence supporting each claim will be critical to the industry moving forward. Modern consumers consider the environmental implications of their purchases and this project will assist the industry to market their product using its environmental credentials with confidence. At this point it appears that there is a substantial list of benefits of turfgrass but those claims vary widely and some of which are not adequately supported by clear, solid evidence. The project was commissioned in February 2013 and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2013.
The project is expected to produce the following outputs:
- A literature review of the benefits of turfgrass;
- A summary document to inform the industry (IAC) to make future research investment decision and also for the levy payers to assist them to use the findings practically within their businesses;
- Media and newsletter articles; and
- A presentation at a future industry conference.
